Driver caught speeding at 136mph on the A5 in Conwy

Four people were caught driving at speeds of over 120mph on roads in Wales last year - with one topping 136mph, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has revealed.

Three of the worst speeders were caught on the A5 in north Wales, while the other was on the M4 in south Wales.

It said the 136mph driver broke the 60mph limit in Conwy by 76mph and was one of the worst cases in Britain.

The figures for 2014 were released following a freedom of information request from IAM to the welsh forces. The figures showed Wales' worst speeder was recorded by North Wales Police at 136mph on the A5 Ty Nant to Dinmael road in Conwy.

The A5 also saw two further instances of over 120mph speeding recorded; 122mph on the Ty Nant-Cerrigydrudion stretch in Conwy; and 121mph at Halton, Wrexham.

The final case of 120mph being exceeded was captured by South Wales Police: 125mph on the M4 between Junction 35 Pencoed and Junction 34 Miskin, where a 70mph limit is in force.

The charity is campaigning for an increase in visible policing to deter excessive speeders.

23,295 Overseas Drivers Escape Speeding Offences

A freedom of information request by road safety charity The Institute of Advanced Motorists has revealed that oversees drivers have escaped 23,295 speeding offences since January 2013 - the equivalent of £2.3 million worth of speeding tickets - across England and Wales.

Gwent Police (which includes South Wales and Dyfed Powys Police forces as part of 'Go Safe' - Wales Road Casualty Reduction Partnership) recorded the third highest number of overseas speeding offences across England and Wales - a reported 2,090, with the highest speed recording of 99mph in a 70mph zone.

Neil Greig, The Institute of Advanced Motorists said:
"The high numbers of oversees speeders on our roads show how important it is that the UK joins up with the rest of Europe to harmonise motoring offences and give the police extra powers to pursue dangerous drivers. Progress on this issue has been very slow and in the meantime thousands of drivers are avoiding fines and bans simply because their cars cannot be easily traced."

Freedom of Information Act Reveals Britain's Top Speeders

So todays news has reveled that a motorist was caught driving at 149mph by a speed camera on the M25 in Swanley, Kent. this is actually probably old news as there has been no date put on the conviction and the information was released via the use of "the freedom of information act"

39 Police authorities in England and wales were asked by IAM the location and speed of the fastest motorists caught in the past year. 33 responded.

In general from reading the information it appears that the amount of speeding morotists is rising rapidly and attempts to make it as socially unacceptable as drink driving are failing miserably, again looking at the facts possibly because the penalties arent as harsh as they are for drink driving
